Canby Ford is an institution in Canby. It has been located at several locations over the past multiple decades. Canby Ford has been here since the 1920′s and has served thousands of locals, and others. Their services range from selling used and new cars and trucks to servicing vehicles, renting cars and participating and donating to most of the local charities and events in Canby.

Rex Samples is one of the sales people that I and my family have gone to for our auto needs. He has been there for over 20 years as have most of the staff. It’s so convenient to have a car dealership in your small town. Businesses like this help a small town to make it self-sustaining. It’s small town at its finest where you know and live next to the people who work here.

I can hardly believe that Thanksgiving is already over, and we are on the fast track to Christmas. This is such a wonderful season. I love getting ready for the big day, and especially making my families favorite dishes, and most loved cookie treats.

I have lived in Canby for 44 years. When my folks told me we were moving to Canby I was 16. I was a Portland kid. I thought my life was over! Really? Moving to a small town! Where is Canby anyway?” I asked my dad. Dad promised I would love it. He told me most of the kids rode their horses to high school. Being gullible, I fell for his teasing as if it were fact. We made the move. But…I found out that Canby kids were just as savvy as big city kids, and I fell in love with this small country town just as Dad said.

That was in 1967. Wow, has Canby changed over the years. Now we have a population of 15,940. In spite of all the change and growth we have seen here The city has managed to maintain the wonderful livability of the small, old town I remember.

Cutsforth’s Market is a grocery store that has always offered the customer great satisfaction. Longtime area residents know the Cutsforths on a first name basis. And know that this store has been owned and operated by the same family through four generations. Newer shoppers and Canbyites appreciate this forward- looking business and appreciate how the store is always evolving to meet their needs.

Cutsforth’s Thriftway is located just East of N Ivy Street on NE 2nd ave. in the Canby Station Shopping Center. Other businesses on the site include Columbia River Bank, Biscuits Cafe, Thai Dish Restaurant, and Canby Station Dry Cleaners, as well as Canby Cinema. This is my one stop shopping center of choice. I love to meet friends at Cutsforth Market’s Espresso Bar and gathering place just inside the door. After relaxing for a time, catching up on everyone’s news, I set out in the store to do my grocery shopping. The amazing in-store bakery and deli offer great taste treats. The beer and wine section display assorted beers and micro-brews. Select wine offerings are a draw to those who appreciate a variety of local wines and special imports. I enjoy choosing healthy, fresh produce, and know that the meat I select will be delicious. I can buy in bulk, and if I don’t find a product I need, the clerks are always happy to order it. Oh, and there is a gift department, a floral shop and a take out pizza counter in the store as well.

But the best part of my shopping experience is their friendly customer service. The store personnel are the most helpful to be found, and are always anxious to help me out to my car with my purchases. You can tell they love their jobs and enjoy working in the store. There is a rewards program for shoppers as well. I value their pricing and I can go on-line to keep up on sales and store events.

Cutsforth’s Thriftway also sponsors local events like the Canby Cruise In and have a large banquet hall upstairs, that can be reserved for special occasions. The store also hosts the Rotary, Kiwanis and Chamber of Commerce of Canby in their Town Hall above the store as well.

Of course Santa will make appearances during the pre Holiday Season, and often a pianist is playing Christmas Music on a Grand piano in the store. I am a believer in supporting our locally owned businesses, and I’m sure you have figured by now, my very favorite! By the way, you might call customer service at Cutsforths and see when Santa will be visiting their store.

Last week, the Canby Swim Center’s future got a lot brighter.  The community spoke during the November 8th election by passing ballot measure 3-385, which will fund the swim center through June 2017.  This is great news for the community!  I currently have my 3 year old son enrolled in swim lessons at the swim center, an activity he really looks forward to every week.

In addition, the swim center offers public swim hours and is home to the Little Penguins swim club, Canby Gators swim club, and also offers water exercise and adult/senior activities.

The Canby Swim Center celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010, and with the support of the community, will now enjoy 5 more years of fun in the water!

Does your garage have a smoke detector?  Go check… I’ll wait…. It is not code to have one, so most people don’t.  Hmmm, are there flammable items in your garage?  I know there are in mine.

A couple of days ago, I got a call from some friends who had stopped by to see me and they said an alarm was going off in my garage.  I gave them the garage code so they got the garage door to open and smoke came billowing out.  They saw some smoldering blankets and bravely pulled them outside.  A lamp had fallen over onto some blankets and caused them to smolder and catch on fire.  The garage and house were filled with smoke, but only the detector in the garage was going off.  That smoke detector in the garage saved my house. Well my friends actually did, but if there hadn’t been a detector in the garage, they wouldn’t have known there was a need to open the garage.

Please, the next time you are at a store that sells smoke detectors, buy one for your garage if you don’t already have one and consider getting some for friends too.  It’s a simple, inexpensive investment in your home’s safety.

Here we are in November… Chilly mornings, frost and fog.  The time of year where we begin to focus on the things we are thankful for.  It’s the time when we begin to think about ways we can meet the needs of others who live in our area.  There is a population in our community that needs resources such as food, clothing and even housing and there is a service here to help.

The Canby Center has set out to meet these needs and more.  They relocated in September to the building on Ivy where Wilco used to be: 896 S. Ivy St.  Canby, OR 97013.

The Canby Center is an evangelical but non-denominational organization devoted to serving the Canby community in “outside-the church-box” ways.

Current Programs include:

FOOD

They offer healthy provisions to families and individuals in the Canby School District who are in need of food.

WARMTH

They furnish individuals with clothing to meet one of the most basic human needs identified which provides an individual with a sense of dignity and self worth.

HYGIENE

They provide access to showers and offer toiletries to individuals and families in the Canby School District to meet the basic need of hygiene.

HEALTH

They aim to empower individuals to take ownership of their health.

HOUSING

They offer two programs to individuals and families in the Canby School District, to help them obtain and maintain stable housing.

If you are in need a resource that can meet your basic needs, the Canby Center (el centro de canby) is there for you. The Canby Center is open MON-THUR 11AM – 5PM.

If you are looking for a place where you can serve your community and/or provide resources to others, the Canby Center is a place for you to give. You can reach the Center at 503-266-2920.

A great way to spend an evening in Canby is at Puddin’ River Chocolates and Wine Bar.

Puddin' River ChocolatesWhen you want to spend a quiet evening sipping wine and eating chocolate, you’ll find this small little wine bar wraps around you like a cozy blanket. The lights are turned down low and the music playing in the background makes for a great place to settle down for a relaxing time to drink some wine and enjoy life in Canby.

Every Thursday night the owner of Puddin’ River, Teresa Sasse, and her staff prepare a home baked special to serve for dinner Thursday through Saturday evening. The beef stroganoff is to die for. And don’t miss the chicken pesto stackers, which are a layering kind of creation with grilled chicken, a layer of mozzarella cheese, tomato, yellow peppers and homemade pesto. Yes, it is one of my favorites.

If you aren’t full from all of that delicious fun, try the peanut butter pie or chocolate truffle cake with raspberry sauce among other choices.

Puddin River is always a wonderful destination for me and my friends and one of the true treasures here in Canby.
